Campaign target reached for francophone installation at University of Ottawa

OTTAWA, March 25, 2013  —  The University of Ottawa and the Monuments de la francophonie organizing committee have reached their fundraising goal! The $100,000 for the installation to be built on the University of Ottawa campus has been raised, to the great pleasure of everyone who came together to make this project happen.

The president of the University of Ottawa, Allan Rock, made the announcement on Saturday at the 15th Banquet de la francophonie de Prescott-Russell. “The francophone community has once more shown its pride by generously rising to the challenge we brought before them last June,” says Rock. “The University is happy to be able to match these funds so the installation can become a reality. And this installation will be—literally—concrete proof of the University of Ottawa’s ongoing commitment to the French language and francophones,” says the president.

“I would like to offer my deepest thanks to all those who contributed to the fundraising campaign and to creating this legacy on the campus of the University of Ottawa,” says Trèva Cousineau, chair of the Monuments de la francophonie organizing committee. “I’d like to also mention that the campaign continues until the end of March…so it’s not too late to get your name on a plaque!”

The installation will be located on the main campus of the University of Ottawa, near Pérez Hall and the Felix Leclerc Memorial. It will include landscaping atop a wood structure as well as plaques in the Franco-Ontarian colours inscribed with the names of donors. The space will become a meeting and greeting place for students and other members of the University community.

Work is scheduled to begin this spring with the inauguration of this symbolic space planned for the fall.
