MEDIA ADVISORY: Afghanistan's path to 2014 and beyond—The transformational decade: views from Afghanistan

OTTAWA, March 11, 2013  —  The University of Ottawa invites members of the media to a public colloquium on Afghanistan and its past, its current issues and its future.

Since 2000, and some may argue even earlier, the international academic community, NGOs, multilateral policy makers, neighbouring countries, super-powers and global media have been awash with analyses and advice on how to control and/or stabilize Afghanistan. Many say that two characteristics define the efforts to understand and assist Afghanistan’s long-suffering citizens: most efforts have been inspired and driven by non-Afghans, and many of these efforts have failed.

This event will feature a panel of experienced Afghani experts, namely: Hon. Mohammad Hanif Atmar, Founder of the Truth and Justice Party; former Minister of Interior; former Minister of Rural Development; and former Minister of Education; Fatima Gailani, President of the Afghanistan Red Crescent Society; and Dr. Mustafa Mastoor, Deputy Minister Finance responsible for reforming the Budget Department, Treasury and Aid Management; as well as Canadian academics, journalists, and civil society representatives.

WHAT: Afghanistan’s path to 2014 and beyond —The transformational decade: views from Afghanistan
WHEN: Thursday, March 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: Social Sciences Building, Room 4007, University of Ottawa (120 University Private, Ottawa| Map)
