OTTAWA, October 18, 2012  —  This year’s Research Universities of the Year rankings, published by Research Infosource Inc., place the University of Ottawa seventh overall, maintaining last year’s position, and eighth in research intensity, rising one spot from the last year among Canada’s top research intensive universities.

The University improved its standings in part thanks to an increase in the amount of research income per full-time faculty member. As for total research funding (from both public and non-government sources), the University of Ottawa also makes the country’s top ten, ranking ninth.

“These standings are a clear sign of the passion, energy and leadership of our researchers, students and teaching staff. They confirm that the University of Ottawa is part of an elite group of research institutions in Canada and the world,” said Mona Nemer, vice-president, research.

Recently, the University of Ottawa placed fourth in the country in science and engineering research in the Measuring Academic Research in Canada: Field-Normalized Academic Rankings 2012. It also gained 14 spots — while most Canadian institutions lost ground — in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Since 2001, the University of Ottawa has placed among the top ten research-intensive universities in Canada.The Research Universities of the Year data is drawn from Statistics Canada and the Research Infosource databases.
