University of Ottawa appoints two new university research chairs to explore patient decision making and new methods of synthesizing drug compounds
OTTAWA, October 10, 2012 — The University of Ottawa is proud to announce two newly appointed university research chairs that will have a significant impact on knowledge translation in patient decision-making and in the synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds. Congratulations to André Beauchemin and Dawn Stacey on their appointments.

University Research Chair in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
Over 90% of drugs on the market have at least one nitrogen atom in their structure. Creating these compounds, however, is not as easy as it seems. An exceptionally talented and acclaimed researcher, André Beauchemin will explore novel methods to optimize creation of nitrogen-containing molecules, in turn accelerating new drug discovery efforts.
Dawn Stacey — Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Nursing
University Research Chair in Knowledge Translation to Patients
At one time or another, everyone has to make important decisions that will have significant consequences on their health. Current approaches to involving patients in health decisions are inadequate, and the existing tools to support them during the process are limited and obsolete. Internationally recognized for her expertise in knowledge translation to patients, Dawn Stacey will design innovative evidence-informed tools proven to engage patients to take an active role in making decisions and evaluate how these tools can be adequately used in everyday visits with health professionals.
