uOttawa soars on global PSE scene rising 14 spots in Times Higher Education Top 200

OTTAWA, October 3, 2012  —  The University of Ottawa has earned a spot in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the second year in a row. After cracking the Top 200 in 2011 and ranking 185th in the world, uOttawa rises fourteen places this year to rank 171st. Only eight Canadian institutions made this year’s Top 200.

“This achievement truly reflects the progress the University has made, beginning with the launch of our Destination 20/20 strategic plan last October,” says Allan Rock, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Ottawa.“The past year has been marked by several milestones that are pivotal as the University of Ottawa forges its path on the international scene.”

One such milestone was the launch of uOttawa’s Centre for Global and Community Engagement, a one-stop shop for information on volunteer opportunities in Ottawa and around the world.

Another great success was the completion of the brand new Social Sciences Building, which opened this fall. All units of the Faculty of Social Sciences are now under the same roof for the first time, giving students and professors the opportunity to collaborate and learn across disciplines like never before.

Finally, the University of Ottawa recently broke ground for its new Advanced Research Complex, which will house the revamped uOttawa Centre for Advanced Photonics and a cluster of state-of-the-art geoscience laboratories, allowing the University to take the next step in becoming Canada’s science and engineering powerhouse.

“At the heart of all our initiatives is the student experience,” says Rock. “It is our commitment to offer students a truly unique educational and cultural experience in an environment that empowers them to pursue discovery, contribute to their communities and reach their full potential.”

The University of Ottawa has improved its score across each of the 13 indicators used by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings to examine a university’s strengths against all aspects of its core mission — teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. All data are collected, analyzed and verified by global data provider Thomson Reuters.

This accomplishment reflects the efforts of the entire University of Ottawa community, including faculty, support staff, students, alumni and donors, who continuously contribute to building the University’s reputation as a world class institution.
