uOttawa signs Access Copyright license, sets path to operate independently by end of 2015
OTTAWA, June 29, 2012 — Today, the University of Ottawa joined a number of Canadian universities who have signed the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) and Access Copyright model license. uOttawa also launched an immediate action plan to ensure it will be able to operate independently of the license by the end of 2015.
“The decision to sign the license was not taken lightly,” said University Librarian Leslie Weir. “Not signing would have exposed the University and its students to costly retroactive payments, which is not something we could do. The license will also protect our faculty and students from copyright infringement claims.The University is committed to having a framework in place by the end of 2015 to act independently of the license. This work has already begun.”
The AUCC and Access Copyright, a Canadian copyright collective model license covers the cost of reproducing print and digital materials included in Access Copyright’s repertoire for research and teaching purposes.
The University of Ottawa remains committed to open access and open educational resources, and will continue to work to support free access to research and other information created by its faculty.
