Residence
Introduction
Hi, I’d like to welcome you to the University of Ottawa residences. One of the cool things about the University of Ottawa is that all first year students are guaranteed housing. We have 7 different buildings offering 3 different styles of accommodations. First of all, the conventional style you’ll find in Stanton, Marchand, Thompson, and Leblanc. Then 90 University offers suite style. Finally Brooks and Hyman Soloway are the apartment style.
Conventional style residence
Let’s have a look at the conventional style residence. Here, in Marchand, you could either be assigned a double room, or live alone in a single room. Let’s visit these rooms. As you can see, the rooms are nice and clean because of the cleaning service that comes once a week to vacuum the floor. All rooms are fully furnished; all you have to bring are blankets and towels. Each student has his or her own phone line as well as access to high speed internet and cable.
Now, we’ll go have a look at the common lounge, which you’ll share with about 25 other students from your floor. This is a place to hang out with your friends, play some pool or watch TV. Let’s go see where we can make some food. The kitchen, which you can find on every other floor in Marchand, is equipped with a stove top, microwave, sink, a refrigerator, and an eating area. All that’s missing are dishes and, of course, groceries.
Washrooms are also shared on these floors. All common areas are cleaned daily, so you will never have to worry about that. The other conventional style residences like Thompson, Stanton and Leblanc all have access to the same facilities, but each has a slightly different layout.
Suite style residence
Now we’ll go over and see some friends in the suite style residence, 90 University. Theses rooms are quite different! All suites in 90University are single-sex, double occupancy with a single room. Your room will be a lot like Jolianne’s room, with a double bed, cable TV, phone and internet access. You and your roommate will share a little kitchenette, which includes a microwave, a refrigerator and a sink. You are also going to share a 3-piece washroom.
Student staying in 90University also benefit from the weekly cleaning service. All residents have access to a full kitchen on the first floor with two ovens, full counters and sinks. The floors in this building have a common lounge and study rooms. On floors 1 through 6, the lounges contain either a pool table or foosball table.
Apartment style residence
The last style of residence at the University of Ottawa is the apartment style. This style can be found in Brooks and in Hyman Soloway. Here we are at Brooks where you can have 2, 3, or 4 people per unit. Each student will have his or her own bedroom. The unit will also have a full kitchen, a living room, eating area and 1 or 2 washrooms. These units are equipped with high speed Internet, a phone line and cable.
The apartment at Hyman Soloway have a different layout. Like Brooks, each student has his or her own bedroom. The kitchen, living room, eating area and washroom are all shared with your roomates. Once again, high speed Internet, a phone line and cable TV are provided to the residents.
As you can see, you can easily find a style of residence to fit your needs here at the University of Ottawa. We hope to see you here in the future.
Residence life is a great way to be immersed in your new University environment. With three styles of residences to choose from - conventional, suite, or apartment - you can make new friends, find places to study with high-speed web access, cook your own meals or relax in common lounges. The great thing is that you never need to leave the comfort of home!
