Health Sciences at Roger Guidon

Hi! My name is François. I am a student in the Health Sciences program. Welcome to Roger Guindon or RGN, as we like to call it for short.

Roger Guindon, which houses the nursing and medicine programs, is located at the Health Sciences campus close to a number of hospitals and health centres. Students have access to a free shuttle that goes back and forth all day long between this campus and the main campus downtown.

As you can see, the campus is located beside several important medical centres, such as the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, the general campus of The Ottawa Hospital, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre and the Rehabilitation Centre. This is great for nursing students because we are right in the middle of the action!

As nursing students, we sometimes spend long hours on campus to study. The library is a wonderful place to spend some of that time and be productive!

Obviously, a good part of our learning takes place in the classroom …

But the important part is the experience we get! Here at the University of Ottawa, we have the opportunity for hands-on learning and we practice clinical nursing skills. These SIM labs do just that, allowing us to interact with patient simulators and perform nursing interventions. They are just like real patients and students have to respond to whatever situation is going on.

Nursing students can also work together with real patients. It might be a little scary at first, but they learn how to deal with the anxiety.

Since the University of Ottawa is bilingual and has a multicultural student population, I find that studying nursing here is the perfect starting point!

The Faculty of Health Sciences includes four schools: Human Kinetics, Nursing, Rehabilitation Sciences and since February 2010 the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences. The Faculty also offers a bachelor degree in Nutrition Sciences.

The School of Nursing and of Rehabilitative Sciences are located in Roger Guindon Hall, at the heart of an 80-acre health sciences centre that includes the Ottawa General Hospital, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and the Royal Ottawa Regional Rehabilitation Centre. A free shuttle service is offered between the main campus and Roger Guindon Hall.
