Professor Vern Krishna, from the Common Law Section, has been made a member of the Order of Canada by Her Excellency Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada.
Fifty-four other Canadians have also been admitted as members, including former professor Julien Payne and alumnus Daniel Poliquin.
Krishna is one of Canada's leading tax scholars. As treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada, he was instrumental in negotiating a national mobility agreement that allows lawyers to practice inter-provincially. He also contributed to a reform of Ontario's bar admission process and has been a leading figure in the evaluation of lawyers with foreign credentials who want to practice in Canada.
Prof. Julien Payne taught at the University of Ottawa for over 20 years and later served as chair of the Law Foundation of Saskatchewan. As one of Canada's eminent family law and dispute resolution experts, he was instrumental in developing Unified Family Courts, no-fault divorce, and the guidelines governing spousal and child support.
Novelist and short story writer, Daniel Poliquin holds a doctorate from the University of Ottawa. He has spent many years fighting for the rights of Franco-Ontarians. As a translator, he exposes Francophone readers to important works of Anglophone, and especially Canadian, authors.
