Six University of Ottawa researchers in fields as diverse as multimedia, obesity, HIV and molecular biology have received $1.3 million in funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
The researchers receiving funding are
- Dr. Antonio Colavita ($200,000), who is studying a microscopic worm to develop new models that may ultimately lead to the development of new drug targets or therapies for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease.
- Dr. John Copeland ($199,620), of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, who researches how genes express themselves in mammalian development.
- Dr. Jim Dimitroulakos ($200,000), who uses the latest techniques of molecular biology and biopharmaceuticals to develop new approaches to cancer treatment.
- Adulmotaleb El-Saddik, PhD ($353,715), who is creating the “Secure Multimedia Research Group” to study ways of preventing breaches of computer security.
- Qiao Li, PhD ($200,000), who is seeking to understand gene transcription processes and whose work may lead to novel treatments for infertility, diabetes, vascular disease, obesity, and hormone disorders.
- Dr. Paul MacPherson ($200,000), who is researching just how the HIV virus weakens and destroys the functioning of the immune system.
