French pianist comes to campus

  Entremont

Legendary French pianist and conductor Philippe Entremont is returning to the University of Ottawa as part of the International Certificate for Piano Artists Program (ICPA) from October 24 to 29.

Entremont, who performed masterclasses at last year’s Homecoming, will be the guest conductor at the University’s season-opening concert on October 29 at Saint Brigid’s Centre for the Arts and Humanities in the Byward Market. He will also lead two piano master classes for the public on October 25 and 26.

Entremont entered the world stage at New York’s Carnegie Hall at the age of 18. Since then, he has pursued a top international career as a pianist and, for the last 30 years, also as a conductor, directing the greatest symphony orchestras of Europe, Asia and America. As principal conductor of the Munich Symphony Orchestra, he led several tours in 2005 and 2006. After serving as music director and chief director of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra for nearly three decades, he is now conductor laureate for life.

Active as a teacher, he is president of the ICPA program and director of the American Conservatory of Fontainebleau. What’s more, his recordings have won the Grand Prix du Disque and the Netherlands Edison Award.

The University of Ottawa’s Department of Music hosted the opening session of the International Certificate for International Artists Program last year for the first time. The program offers a graduate master class and mentorship program to highly talented young pianists who are starting professional careers. Participants attend master classes and lessons with Entremont, visiting artist Nelson Delle-Vigne Fabbri, as well as Univesity of Ottawa piano faculty members David Jalbert, Stéphane Lemelin and Andrew Tunis.
