Angus McMurtry, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education

What is your most important function at the University and why?

Teaching and researching interdisciplinary and interprofessional education are my most important roles.

What inspires you the most about your job?

Finding a way to productively bridge interdisciplinary and interprofessional boundaries inspires me the most.

How did you come to your area of research?

I came into this area through my interdisciplinary education and work experiences, including making an online career guide and interviewing people in hundreds of different professions.

What was your life’s proudest moment?

Other than meeting my wife and the birth of my children, co-founding the (now very widely used) career guide and completing my PhD on the education of interdisciplinary health teams are the proudest moments of my life.

What would you change in the world today if you could?

I’d change the narrow-minded (and definitely NOT interdisciplinary) way in which most political and business leaders view environmental issues.

Who is the most influential person in your life?

My interest in interdisciplinarity stemmed from the fact that there were several different people who strongly influenced me — each of them from a different profession and espousing very different world views.

What is your favourite pastime?

My favourite pastime is playing shinny on our local rink and “pick up” basketball in the University gym.
