Nominees announced for Rideau theatre awards

The University of Ottawa’s Department of Theatre is well-represented in the recent announcement of nominees for the inaugural Rideau Awards, which celebrate achievement in English professional theatre in Ottawa.

Professor Kevin Orr was nominated as best director for Greek (Repercussion Theatre), which was also nominated in the best production category. Professor Peter Froehlich was nominated for best male performance in Merz (New Theatre of Ottawa). The show also received a nomination in the best production category.

Natalie Joy Quesnel, Master of Fine Arts graduate ‘06, was nominated as best director for Betrayal (Third Wall Theatre) and as best director in the emerging artists’ category.

Other nominees include part-time professors Charles McFarland and Kristina Watt, guest directors Janet Irwin and Linda Balduzzi, and Brian Smith, who has designed shows for the department.

The awards will be presented during a celebration on April 13, at Arts Court.

The first three graduates of the department’s Master of Fine Arts in Directing, Todd Duckworth, Natalie Joy Quesnel and Amanda Kellock, have all been recently nominated for awards for their first professional shows since graduation.
