Monique Frize, Professor, School of Information Technology and Engineering

What inspires you the most about your job?

The discovery of new knowledge and identifying new solutions to existing problems, especially in medical engineering.

How did you come to your area of research?

I was looking for an engineering field where I could help people — one with a relationship to health sciences and medicine.

What gives you the most pride?

My main pride stems from how well my graduate students have done in their thesis work and how well they are doing in the world of work since graduating.

What would you change in the world today if you could?

I would like to live in a world of peace, where all wars are eliminated, where religious extremism is outlawed everywhere, and where there is a critical mass of women in decision-making roles in societies around the world.

You’ve just won $1 million. What would you do?

I would take a nice vacation, then create a centre for studies in gender, ethics, and technology and work there part-time.

Which five people (living or dead) would you like to invite to a dinner party?

My list would include Hypatia, Marie de Gournay, Batsua Reginald Makin, Elsie Gregory McGill and Ursula Franklin. The first three appear in the book I am writing about women scientists and engineers. I would love to ask them many questions and tell them how much I admire their work.
