What is it about your job that inspires you most?
I consider research and teaching to be the two most important aspects of my job. The inspiration for the teaching comes from the students themselves. When I see in their eyes and faces how they think and question and finally understand, that is my inspiration and reward. The most inspiring aspect of research for me is to see the interplay between mathematics and biology: each one has something to offer to and to learn from the other.
How did you come to your area of research?
This was a long and not always straight path. By far the most important influences were the inspiring researchers in my field – mostly my supervisors.
What would you change in the world today if you could?
I would wish that every child could grow up in an environment in which they experience things for themselves and learn with love, acceptance, tolerance and trust.
What is your favourite pastime?
Only one? There are many things I love to do in my spare time. I spend as much time as possible outside: hiking in the summer, skiing in the winter. I play piano and I dance. I love good books and cooking good meals.
What is the best-kept secret in your department?
I don’t know – it is being kept so well. But if I did, I would not tell you; otherwise it would not be a secret anymore.
