The Faculty of Sciences will host the sixth edition of the Canadian University Science Games, from January 7 to 11, 2004, on the campus of the University of Ottawa – Canada’s university.
The Canadian University Science Games are an annual competition held between science students of different specializations from across Canada. Some 20 teams with more than 350 students will participate in academic, artistic, or sporting events.
Participants in this year’s competition will compete in the following activities:
The cascade
This event tests competitors’ ability to conceptualize, improvise, and build a cascade within a given timeframe. The challenge will involve the projection of a small, stuffed version of the University of Ottawa’s mascot, the Gee-Gee, into a basketball hoop. This is the main competition of the games and could make or break a team in competition. Points are awarded for functionality and creativity
Trivia challenge
The Trivia Challenge tests teams on general knowledge, although the emphasis will be on science. Questions will fall intoseveral categories, including biology and health sciences, chemistry and physics, mathematics, and miscellaneous (music, sports, pop culture, etc).
The debate
The purpose of the debate is to bring to light some of the more controversial topics in science ethics. Topics may include genetically modified food, deforestation, “designer babies,” and other topics.
Picture rally
During the picture rally, teams will be given a set of pictures of significant locations throughout the city that were taken back in September. The challenge will be to then duplicate the images in the winter.
Artistic styles of the science student
This event gives participants an opportunity to show Ottawa’s scientific community that scientists do in fact have a creative side! Details of this activity will be kept a surprise, but it will be an outdoor event.
