The John Davis Burton Award has been given to a student who has made a significant contribution towards awareness, equity, and to the integration of persons with disabilities. This year, the award was given to uOttawa’s Caitlin Renneson, a first-year Common Law student.
Described as a devoted and persevering individual with a strong sense of community, Renneson has dedicated time and energy to projects that are both meaningful to her, and that also promote awareness of issues that affect people with disabilities.
The $2500 award was presented to Renneson on February 16, 2007 by Faith Silver who made an eloquent tribute to her late husband.
The award was established by students, family, and friends in memory of John Burton, who taught at uOttawa’s Faculty of Education as well as at Carleton University and at Algonquin College. Dr. Burton’s legacy lives on through those, like Renneson, who advocate for equal access to education for persons with disabilities.
