  Audrey Giles

Audrey Giles, assistant professor, School of Human Kinetics

What is your most important function at the University?

My most important function is to bring attention to the physical practices of one of the most marginalized groups in Canada: Aboriginal women living in Arctic and sub-Arctic communities.

What is it about your job that inspires you most?
I am most inspired by students who tell me that I have made them think about their world in a new way. Is there a greater compliment?

How did you come to your area of research?
After spending summers working as a swimming pool supervisor in remote Inuit, Cree, and Dene communities (yes, really!), I became fascinated by how the experiences of Aboriginal peoples, and especially girls and women living in remote communities, were systematically ignored in academic literature.

What would your co-workers be most surprised to know about you?
My age! I believe I am one of the youngest professors at the University of Ottawa.

What is your favourite pastime?
Training my brilliant, bilingual border collie, Tundra!
