September 14 was a special day for Marie des Anges Loyer when she was joined by family, colleagues and friends, including classmates from the University’s class of 1955, to mark the launch of the Marie des Anges Loyer-Da Silva Research Chair in Public Health Nursing, the result of Loyer’s $1.3 million donation to the University of Ottawa.
Also during the ceremony, an amphitheatre in the Roger Guindon Building was named in Loyer’s honour.
Marie des Anges Loyer has a long history with the University of Ottawa: as a student, teacher, dean and director of the School of Nursing, as well as the associate dean at the Faculty of Health Sciences. She is a past member of the University’s Board of Governors.
Throughout her more than 50-year involvement with the University, Loyer has continually recognized the need to give back to the community. With a career in community health care, she is keenly aware of the need to explore the geo-socio political determinants in community health programs. Her donation will allow the Faculty of Health Sciences to launch new research activities, with a particular emphasis on marginalized and disadvantaged groups.
Loyer has made significant contributions to the University over the years, inspiring those who have worked and studied under her direction. Sylvie Corbeil, winner of the 2002 Loyer-Da Silva Scholarship and one of her former students, acknowledged the “passion M
me Loyer transmitted to her students.”
