On August 14th, the University of Ottawa joined ten other Canadian universities in declining Maclean’s magazine’s invitation to assist in this year’s University Rankings exercise.
Concerned by the methodological flaws in the rankings exercise, a joint letter was sent to Maclean’s highlighting the concerns. The universities remain open to the possibility of future collaborations with Maclean’s provided that an agreement can be reached on providing informative and valid data analysis.
“The Maclean’s annual survey of universities misuses data and therefore violates both our research values and educational principles,” says David Mitchell, vice president, university relations. “However, as a public institution, we welcome public assessment of our performances and are committed to accountability — especially to our students.”
The University of Ottawa is committed to providing students with reliable information that will help them choose where to undertake their studies. With an annual participation in the Canadian Undergraduate Survey Consortium and a commitment to achieving measurable goals through Vision 2010, the University is continually assessing programs and services.
