CFL standout and former football Gee-Gees coach, Don Gilbert, was inducted in the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. Gilbert played three sports at the University of Buffalo before joining the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League with whom he won a Grey Cup. He later played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Gilbert was head coach at the University of Ottawa for five seasons leading the Gee-Gees to a Vanier Cup victory in 1975. That year, he was named Canadian College Coach of the Year. Gilbert was inducted in the University of Ottawa Hall of Fame in 1995.
In recognition of Gilbert’s excellence in coaching, Sports Services will set up a fund in his name, which will provide a sustained source of funding for the coaching-related needs of the Gee-Gees football program.
