A new career centre opening at the University of Ottawa marks a bold new initiative for students at the School of Management – and a bold new investment by those students in their future.
The centre was created following a student referendum that established fees of $100 per semester for undergraduate and $150 per semester for graduate students to provide its budget. The referendum, which took place in the spring of 2003, was notable both for record voter turnout and for its result – 90 per cent of the votes cast in favour of the centre and the associated fees.
The official opening of the Centre took place on November 3, 2003 – the first day of National Career Week. To mark the contribution and commitment of School of Management students to the project and to their futures, student representatives did the ribbon-cutting.
“The career centre offers our students the specialized services that they need,” says Peter Koppel, the director of undergraduate programs and assistant dean, Student Services, at the School of Management. “And the successes we’re seeing in the first few weeks of its operation are tremendously encouraging.”
