Giving Options

Frequency
It is possible to make your contribution according to the frequency that suits you best. You can give in a single payment or make a larger pledge with regular contributions over a set period of time or through monthly payments.

Outright gifts (cash, cheques and credit cards)
Outright gifts allow the University to use your gift immediately. You receive a tax-credit receipt for the full amount of your gift. If the amount is under $20 and you would like a tax receipt, please notify the Annual Fund Office. Please note that cheques must be made out to the University of Ottawa.

Pledges
Pledges are commitments made in good faith to donate an amount over a specified period of time. They can be realized through scheduled instalments or through monthly giving.

Monthly giving
By choosing monthly donations, you

  • enjoy a simple, convenient way to support the University of Ottawa,
  • make a contribution that will add up significantly,
  • provide the University with an ongoing, reliable source of funding,
  • enable the University to plan ahead and ensure future projects,
  • help lower administrative costs related to mailings and gift-processing, and
  • join a community of 950 donors who, in total, give more than $29,000 every month.

Credit card
You can authorize the University of Ottawa to automatically withdraw an amount directly from your credit card each month, for a set period of time or until further notification (Visa and MasterCard only).

Payroll and pension deductions
Members of the faculty and support staff of the University may chose to contribute directly from their pay and retirees may chose to do so from their pension. If you are interested in this option, please contact the Annual Fund Office or join the monthly giving program online.

Electronic Fund Transfer (pre-authorized chequing)
You can send a void cheque, and authorize the University of Ottawa to automatically withdraw an amount directly from your bank account each month, for a set period of time or until further notification (Canadian bank accounts only).

Other types of gifts

United Way
It is possible to donate to the University through the United Way Campaign by indicating “University of Ottawa” and our charitable registration number (11927 8877 RR0001) when solicited. Please note that an administration fee will apply and that the University will not be notified of donor names.

Stock and securities
Publicly-traded stocks and securities donated directly to the University of Ottawa are popular gifts due to increased tax benefits introduced by the federal government. When making this type of gift, you must transfer securities to the University. The donation will not qualify for the reduced taxable capital gain if the shares are sold first and the proceeds (cash) then given to the University.

Gifts of Securities
Gifts of Securities are a fast and easy way to make a donation to the University of Ottawa.
To send us a gift, please complete our Donation Form (PDF) and mail it or fax it to:

Compound Growth Fund
A compound growth fund is arranged by contributing cash or property (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, RRSPs, other assets) to the University of Ottawa. The University invests your donated gift until it reaches the predetermined deferred level you established with your University representative, for example, two or three times the total contribution. You will receive a charitable tax credit that reflects your annual contribution towards the full amount of your pledge. Once the fund reaches its predetermined deferred level, the University of Ottawa will use your deferred gift according to your previously stated request.

Gifts of property
Any property that can be valued may be a potential gift in support of University of Ottawa initiatives. Also known as gifts-in-kind, such gifts may include but are not limited to

  • personal property such as books,
  • capital property such as stocks or bonds,
  • real property such as a house, real estate, or a cottage,
  • cultural property such as a painting or a sculpture.

Gifts-in-kind are accepted at the discretion of the University of Ottawa based upon the suitability of the gift. If accepted, you will receive a tax-credit receipt for the fair market value of the gift, determined through an appraisal process.
