IntroductionThe IUCN Academy of Environmental Law is dedicated to advancing knowledge of environmental law through an international network of universities teaching and researching in this area.The Academy engages participating universities, governmental institutions and international environmental organisations in innovative multi-disciplinary research into how law can best address environmental problems around the world. The Academy complements the work and activities of the IUCN Environmental Law Programme through its academic endeavours. It thus contributes to the mission of IUCN and the achievement of mandate of the IUCN Commission of Environmental Law. It cooperates closely with the IUCN Environmental Law Centre. Latest NewsUpdate on the Election of the 2008 Governing CouncilThe election process for the Academy’s new Governing Council is currently underway. The slate of candidates is representative of all regions of the world. The e-mail ballot will be open until 14 January 2008. The election results will be announced as soon as possible after that date.
Planning for the 2008 Academy Colloquium in Mexico As previously announced, the 2008 Colloquium will be held in Mexico City from November 10 to 15, 2008. The theme will be “Poverty Alleviation and Environmental Protection.” The colloquium is being organized by the Metropolitan Autonomous University and an Organizing Committee drawn from a number of Mexican universities and other bodies. The Chair of the Committee is Professor José Juan González. An initial planning meeting took place in Mexico City on Monday November 12, 2007. The 60 participants were welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Dr. Roberto Gutiérrez. The Rector of the Metropolitan Autonomous University, Dr Adrián De Garay and Professor Nicholas Robinson, Chair of the IUCN Academy, delivered opening addresses. Teaching and Capacity Building SurveyA survey prepared by the Academy’s Teaching and Capacity Building Committee has been sent out to all member institutions for return on January 25, 2008.
